Character Café-
BLT & SEL Recommendations: Parent Communication:
How can we let parents know how to use this? Informational sheet--YES
How does it appear for parent receiving this? (Does alert/email/text say it is from OTUS, Westview, or from Teacher name?
- Most prestigious award for a student to receive that focuses on demonstrating one of the six pillars of character.
- Student must demonstrate good character for a full month (i.e. no incident reports)
- Teacher/Staff member is expected choose ONE student for the month from each class.
- 24 hours in advance of Character Cafe, each teacher provides to Mrs. Garcia, a completed certificate including the name of the student and a short description of which pillar (or all 6 pillars) the nominated student demonstrated within the last month. Consider personalizing the reason as this makes a greater impact on students than a generic description used for all students nominated from that classroom.
- Please verify that student name is spelled correctly, as the recognition immediately loses it's prestige if we did not take the time to look up the accurate spelling.
- Names will be read aloud during morning announcements. Students should report to cafeteria as usual, and Mr. Buttimer will come to get them at the start of the lunch period.
- Students will receive a Westview Wildcats pencil, the certificate, as well as having their group and individual photos displayed on the bulletin board in the main hallway.
- Once per month (Check the shared Google Calendar).
- Rewarded when a student has accomplished a goal, earned an improved grade, or made a notable improvement.
- Principal awards are signed by the principal at the end of the day on Fridays, around 3:00 p.m.
- All teachers/staff members may award a principal award to a student.
- Teachers/staff members may choose as many students as they feel are deserving.
- Diane and/or Annette will highlight names on class rosters so they can be called during morning announcements during the next school day. Please prepare your students to share their last, first names as they come through the line.
- Please let Diane/Annette know when the full class is earning a principals award, as this simplifies keeping track of names.
- After considering some recent research regarding intrinsic motivation the SEL Committee has decided to discontinue using PAWS at Westview.
- Students may still earn classroom rewards for demonstrating outstanding behaviors or personal accomplishments.
- When awarding extrinsic reinforcement, staff members should focus on the specific behavior that the student exhibited in order to accomplish something, demonstrate improvement, etc. Intrinsic motivation in students can best be enhanced when students reflect on the good feelings associated with the behavior, and the positive attention gained from those that they respect such as the teacher and classmates in a supportive classroom community.
BLT & SEL Recommendations: Parent Communication:
- Record date, time, basic summary of phone calls, face to face meetings about the student, including IEP's and conferences. Please email parents through Otus when addressing an issue of concern so that it is logged.
- Parent Teacher Conferences:
- Bullet point summary of what was discussed; can be viewed by parents, so be mindful of communicating professionally. (Like MyChart with doctor)
- Who has responsibility of entering contact?
- Classroom teacher in most cases.
- Special Ed. Case Manager in cases of IEP meetings
- Incident reports logged as a negative recognition by Health Clerk after processing; teacher logs communication with parent(s).
- When do we enter something?
- Positive: Try to record as frequently as possible, but minimally 1 per child per month.
- Negative: Record for Chromebook not charged/not brought to school/missing headphones technology misuse that wasn't logged as incident report, missing homework assignment.
